A workday-by-workday record of when I first wanted a cocktail and of what variety
By Jim Martin
In 2009, writer Jim Martin began a 30-day journal to document his regular drinking cravings.
I’m an avid drinker and writer. Let’s face facts - those are the two things I like to do the most. I came to a realization about 2 months ago that EVERY DAY I get a craving to drink. I can recognize it. I think to myself - “Fuck! I know what I’m going to drink tonight…” And I even base the rest of my day around my drinking. I’ll swipe a couple cans of diet cola from work if I want to binge on rum or jack (I slip it in my cans when I’m at home so my roommates keep their opinions to themselves and their yaps shut) or I’ll plan my route home to stop by a store that has the variety of beer or wine that I’m craving… It’s an every day thing, and it’s one of the only things that keep me from losing my mind.
Monday, 6/8
5:46pm – I really wanted a bottle of red wine. Something with meaty drinkability – like a Zinfandel. I started thinking about dinner… Maybe I would have some kind of stringy, hearty, bloody meat drenched in a wine sauce and wash it down with wine. Delectable.
Tuesday, 6/9
3:57pm – The urge to drink a Belgian style ale washed over me… like when I’m drinking and want a cigarette – my whole body tensed in anticipation.
Wednesday, 6/10
3:48pm – The desire to drink was curtailed by the glass of champagne that was provided for my coworker’s birthday. While thankful and slightly buzzed from champagne at work, I became annoyed with the “small pours” and took it upon myself to swipe a bottle and store it under my desk.
